Egyptians are very proud of their customs and culture, which they value very much. By learning about and respecting their practices, you show that you care about them and make it easier to get to know them better. Also, respecting local traditions can help you avoid unintentional errors and misunderstandings that could make it hard to communicate with Egyptians.
Egypt is heaven for people who like to learn about the past. The beautiful Pyramids of Giza, the mysterious Sphinx, and the beautiful temple of Luxor and Karnak Temple are just a few of the old wonders still waiting to be found. But Egypt isn't just about history. Along the Red Sea coast are beautiful beaches where you can relax and soak up the sun.
Egyptians are known for being friendly and welcoming to tourists, and they often go out of their way to ensure guests feel at home. Local shops, called souks, are a great place to meet people, try real Egyptian food, and get a feel for how people live in Egypt's Nightlife.
Egypt is where you can have a unique and memorable trip, whether you want to walk through the busy streets of Cairo, cruise down the Nile, or explore the vast deserts. But if you're going to get the most out of your trip and show respect for the local culture, knowing what you should and shouldn't do while you're there is essential.
Egyptian Cultural Guide to Do's and Don'ts
What to do in Egypt
Do Respect Local Customs and Traditions
Egypt is a place with a lot of history and a lot of rituals. Even though modernity has changed things, it's important to honor the cultural narrative that shapes everyday life.
- Do Greet with a Smile and Polite Phrases: Start talks with a warm smile and a friendly welcome, like "As-salaam alaykum" (peace be upon you). Kindness goes a long way toward making people like each other.
- Do Dress Modestly: Wear clothes that cover your shoulders, chest, and knees when you go to holy sites or other strict places. This shows respect for the ideals of the area.
- Do Bargain Respectfully: In Egyptian markets and bazaars, it's usual to haggle. Participate in the process with fun and courtesy, but don't push too hard or be rude.
- Do Remove Shoes Before Entering Homes: Taking off your shoes is polite and clean if you are called to an Egyptian home.
- Do Use Your Right Hand: In Islam, the right hand is clean, and the left hand is dirty. Make motions, touch things, and eat with your right hand.
- Do Accept Offers of Tea or Coffee: Hospitality is a big part of Egyptian society. If someone offers you tea or coffee, consider it a sign of friendship and goodwill.
Do Embrace Dining Etiquette
Egyptian food is a delicious mix of tastes from many different countries. Using proper eating manners makes sure that everyone has a pleasant time.
- Do wash your hands before and after meals: Many traditional meals are eaten without tools. To stay clean, wash your hands before and after you eat.
- Do Use Bread to Scoop: Scoop up food with bread instead of using tools. This is called "khubz," and it is a normal thing to do at meals.
- Do Wait for the Host to Start Eating: If you're a guest in an Egyptian home, don't start eating until the host does. It shows that you appreciate the host's kindness.
- Do Compliment the Cook: Tell the cook how much you enjoyed the meal by complimenting them. This is a nice thing to do, and it shows appreciation for the work that went into making the meal.
Do handle your social interactions with care
Getting to know the locals is a fun part of traveling, but knowing the social rules to avoid mistakes is essential.
- Do Call People by Their Titles: It's nice to call people by their titles, like "Mr." or "Mrs." followed by their first name, especially when meeting them for the first time.
- Do make small talk: Egyptians often talk with each other to get to know each other. Ask about their family, health, and other things going on in their life.
- Do Respect Gender Roles: Be aware that Egypt has distinct gender roles. Men and women can sometimes hang out separately. Always do what your Egyptian friends tell you to do.
Do Prioritize Cleanliness and Hygiene
In Egyptian society, keeping clean and caring for your habits are very important.
- Do Remove Shoes Before Entering Homes: This isn't just a rule for homes; some businesses and places of the company may also ask you to take your shoes off before entering.
- Do Carry Tissues and Hand Sanitizer: Public restrooms may not always have adequate supplies. You'll be ready for anything if you carry tissues and hand cleaners.
Do Tip Appropriately
Tipping in Egypt, which Egyptians call "baksheesh," is a popular way to show thanks for good service.
- Do Tip Service Workers: It's common to leave a tip in restaurants, hotels, and other places that offer service. A small amount goes a long way when you want to say thanks for good service.
- Do Talk About Taxi Fares: Before getting in a cab, talk to the driver about the price to avoid confusion. The key is to be nice but firm.
What to don't in Egypt
Don't Disregard Islamic Practices
Egypt's main religion is Islam, and to be a polite tourist, you need to know about its traditions and customs.
- Don't eat, drink, or smoke in public during Ramadan: Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during this holy month. Don't eat, drink, or smoke in public places because fasting people may be there.
- Don't go into mosques without permission: Some mosques may let non-Muslims in, but you should always ask before going in and follow any rules.
- Don't disrespect religious items: Treat the Quran, prayer beads, and other religious items with care. Don't walk on prayer rugs or point your feet toward holy things.
Don't Engage in Public Displays of Affection
Egypt is a strict country, so it's best to avoid showing love publicly, as it could be seen as rude or unnecessary.
- Don't Hug, Kiss, or Hold Hands in Public: Most people, even partners, don't show love between people of different sexes. Keep personal actions for when you're alone.
Don't Discuss Politics and Religion
Egypt has a long and exciting history of politics and religion, but these sensitive subjects should be treated carefully.
- Don't criticize the government: Be careful when discussing politics because blaming the government can lead to awkward situations or misunderstandings.
- Don't argue about religion: Don't argue about religion, especially if you know little about Islamic theory. Respect the different views and customs of the people who live there.
Don't take pictures without being told to
Even though Egypt's landmarks are well-known and beautiful, remember that not all Egyptians like having their pictures taken without permission.
- Don't Take Pictures of People Without Asking: Always ask permission before taking pictures of people, especially in private or open situations.
Don't forget to be sensitive to other cultures
Politely traveling in Egypt is based on understanding the country's culture.
- Don't point your feet's soles: In Islam, the feet are seen as the lowest part of the body. Don't point your feet at people or holy items as a sign of respect.
- Don't Get Loud When You Disagree: Talk about differences and mistakes calmly and politely. Getting louder can be seen as a sign of anger.
