Before You Arrive at Cairo International Airport

Preparing before your flight can save valuable time once you land. A few simple steps will help ensure a smooth entry into Egypt.

Have Your Travel Documents Ready

Before landing, make sure you have easy access to:

• A passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date.
• Your approved Egypt eVisa (if applicable).
• Visa-on-arrival payment, if eligible.
• Hotel reservation details.
• Return or onward flight information.
• Travel insurance documents.
• Contact details for your tour operator or airport transfer service.

Keeping these documents together will help speed up the immigration process.

Egypt eVisa or Visa on Arrival?

Many travelers can apply for an Egypt eVisa before departure, allowing them to complete immigration more quickly after landing. Others may qualify for a visa on arrival, which can be purchased at designated airport counters before reaching passport control.

Applying for an eVisa in advance is generally the more convenient option, especially during busy travel periods, as it reduces time spent waiting at visa counters.

Always check the latest visa requirements for your nationality before traveling to Egypt, as eligibility may change over time.

Immigration at Cairo International Airport

After leaving your aircraft, simply follow the clearly marked signs directing passengers toward immigration.

During busy arrival periods, queues can become longer, particularly when several international flights arrive simultaneously. Airport staff are available throughout the terminal to assist travelers if needed.

At passport control, immigration officers typically request:

• Your passport
• Egypt eVisa or visa-on-arrival confirmation
• Arrival information if required

Most interactions are brief, and once your documents are approved, your passport will be stamped, officially welcoming you to Egypt.

If you're traveling with children or as part of a guided tour, the process is generally just as straightforward.

Baggage Claim and Customs at Cairo International Airport

After successfully passing through immigration, follow the clearly marked signs leading to the Baggage Claim area. Electronic information screens throughout the terminal display your flight number alongside the assigned baggage carousel, making it easy to locate your checked luggage.

Depending on your airline, the number of arriving international flights, and airport traffic, baggage delivery usually takes between 15 and 40 minutes. While waiting, it's a good opportunity to organize your travel documents or contact your airport transfer service if necessary.

Before leaving the baggage claim area, carefully check that you've collected all your belongings. Since many suitcases look similar, always verify the luggage tag to avoid accidentally taking another passenger's bag.

If your luggage is delayed, damaged, or missing, don't leave the arrivals hall before reporting the issue. Every airline has a dedicated Lost & Found or Baggage Services desk located near the baggage claim area. Airline representatives will help you complete a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and explain how your luggage will be delivered to your hotel if it arrives later.

Once you've collected your bags, you'll proceed to the customs inspection area. Most tourists carrying only personal belongings pass through customs quickly without any additional screening. Travelers carrying valuable electronics, commercial goods, or items exceeding Egypt's duty-free allowances may be asked to declare them.

The customs process is generally efficient, allowing most international visitors to exit the airport within a few minutes.

Egypt Currency Exchange, ATMs, and Banking Services

One of the first things many visitors need after arriving in Egypt is local currency. Although hotels, major restaurants, and shopping malls often accept international credit and debit cards, having Egyptian Pounds (EGP) is essential for small purchases, tipping, taxis, local markets, and some attractions.

Fortunately, Cairo International Airport offers several convenient banking services immediately after customs.

Inside the arrivals terminal, you'll find:

• Official currency exchange offices
• Bank-operated exchange counters
• Multiple ATMs
• Banking services available throughout the day

ATMs are usually the most convenient option for withdrawing Egyptian pounds directly from your international debit or credit card. Most machines accept Visa, Mastercard, and other major international cards.

If you prefer exchanging cash, use only the official exchange offices located inside the airport. Avoid exchanging money with unofficial individuals offering better rates, as these transactions are neither secure nor recommended.

You don't need to exchange a large amount immediately after arrival. Carrying enough cash for your first day—including transportation, meals, and small expenses—is usually sufficient until you reach your hotel or city center.

Buying a SIM Card at Cairo International Airport

Purchasing a local SIM card is one of the smartest decisions you can make after arriving in Egypt. Having immediate internet access allows you to navigate Cairo, contact your hotel, communicate with your tour guide, use translation apps, and book transportation without relying on public Wi-Fi.

Several official mobile network providers operate service counters inside the arrivals terminal, including:

• Vodafone Egypt
• Orange Egypt
• Etisalat Egypt
• WE

Their staff can recommend prepaid tourist packages that include generous data allowances, local calls, and international minutes depending on your travel needs.

Registration is quick and usually requires only your passport. In most cases, your SIM card is activated within a few minutes, and the staff will even install it in your phone if requested.

If your phone supports eSIM technology, some providers also offer digital activation, allowing you to connect even more quickly.

For travelers planning to visit Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, or Sharm El Sheikh or enjoy a Nile River cruise, having reliable mobile internet makes your journey significantly more convenient.

Transportation from Cairo International Airport

After leaving the arrivals hall, you'll find several transportation options depending on your budget, destination, and preferred level of comfort. Choosing the right transfer can save time and help you begin your trip to Egypt stress-free.

The main transportation options include:

• Private airport transfers
• Hotel shuttle services
• Uber and ride-hailing apps
• Licensed airport taxis
• Public buses

While all options are available, many international visitors choose a private Cairo airport transfer for its convenience, especially after a long international flight.

Private Airport Transfers

A private airport transfer is often the easiest and most comfortable way to leave Cairo International Airport. Your professional driver monitors your flight arrival time, waits inside the arrivals hall with a personalized name sign, assists with your luggage, and drives you directly to your hotel in a modern air-conditioned vehicle.

Private transfers eliminate the stress of negotiating taxi fares, navigating unfamiliar roads, or searching for transportation after a long flight. They are especially recommended for first-time visitors, families, senior travelers, business travelers, and anyone booking Egypt tour packages.

Many reputable travel companies include complimentary airport pickup as part of their tour packages, allowing you to start your Egyptian adventure immediately upon arrival.

Uber and Ride-Hailing Services

Uber operates in Cairo and has become a popular transportation choice for many visitors. Using the Uber app allows you to view estimated fares before booking, track your driver in real time, and pay electronically if preferred.

Although Uber is generally reliable, pickup locations may vary depending on airport terminal regulations. During busy periods, waiting times can also be longer than expected.

Travelers should ensure they have mobile internet access before requesting a ride, making a local SIM card especially useful immediately after arrival.

Airport Taxis

Licensed airport taxis are available 24 hours a day outside each arrivals terminal at Cairo International Airport. They offer a convenient option for travelers who have not arranged transportation in advance, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

Always use the official taxi queue located outside the terminal and avoid accepting rides from individuals who approach you inside the arrivals hall. Official airport taxis are generally more reliable and help reduce the risk of overcharging.

Before starting your journey, confirm the estimated fare or make sure the driver agrees to use the meter if available. Since traffic conditions in Cairo can vary significantly depending on the time of day, travel times and costs may fluctuate.

Airport taxis are a practical choice for visitors heading to central Cairo, Giza, or nearby hotels, especially if you're traveling with luggage and prefer a direct transfer.

Hotel Shuttle Services

Many international hotels and luxury resorts in Cairo provide airport shuttle services for their guests. Some include complimentary transportation as part of the room rate, while others offer it for an additional fee.

Booking your hotel shuttle before arrival ensures that a representative will be waiting to meet you at the airport. This option is particularly convenient for first-time visitors who prefer a seamless transfer without navigating public transportation or arranging a taxi after landing.

If you've reserved one of the many Egypt vacation packages or Cairo tours, airport pickup is often included in your itinerary. Check with your tour operator before departure to confirm your pickup details.

Public Transportation in Cairo

Public transportation is available from Cairo International Airport, but it may not be the most practical option for international travelers arriving with luggage.

Public buses connect the airport to various areas of Cairo at low cost. However, they can be crowded, schedules may vary, and routes may be difficult to navigate if you're unfamiliar with the city.

For visitors arriving for the first time, especially after a long international flight, a private transfer or licensed taxi usually provides a much more comfortable and efficient start to the trip.

How Far Is Cairo International Airport from the Pyramids of Giza?

One of the first questions many visitors ask after landing is how far the airport is from Egypt's most famous landmark.

The Pyramids of Giza are located approximately 45 to 50 kilometers (28 to 31 miles) southwest of Cairo International Airport. Depending on traffic, the journey typically takes 45 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Cairo is known for its busy roads, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours. Travel times can increase considerably during these periods, so it's wise to allow extra time if you have scheduled tours or museum visits.

Many travelers choose to head directly from the airport to their hotel before visiting the pyramids the following day. Others book a private transfer that includes a stop at the Pyramids of Giza, making the most of their arrival day if time allows.

Hotels Near Cairo International Airport

If you're arriving late at night, departing early the next morning, or have a long layover, staying near Cairo International Airport can be a convenient option.

The airport area offers accommodations ranging from luxury hotels to comfortable mid-range properties, many of which provide airport shuttle services.

Benefits of staying near the airport include:

• Quick access to all airport terminals
• Reduced travel time after long international flights
• Comfortable accommodations for overnight layovers
• Shuttle services offered by many hotels
• Easy connections for domestic flights to Luxor, Aswan, Hurghada, or Sharm El Sheikh

However, if you're planning to spend several days exploring Cairo, staying in downtown Cairo or Giza will place you closer to major attractions such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and Khan El Khalili Bazaar.
