Who built the temples of Abu Simbel?

The temples were commissioned by Pharaoh Ramses II, also called the Great. He ordered their construction in the 13th century BCE to honor the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah, as well as to celebrate himself as a living deity. Ramses II also intended the site to impress travelers entering Egypt from Nubia. The façade, with its four colossal, seated statues of the king, stands as a testament to his power and devotion. Nearby, a smaller temple was dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor, emphasizing the pharaoh’s respect for his queen and the divine.

What Is the Abu Simbel Sun Festival?

The King Ramses Sun Festival is a celebration of the rare moment when sunlight travels through the temple’s long corridor and illuminates three of the four seated figures inside: Ramses II, Ra-Horakhty, and Amun-Ra. The fourth statue, Ptah, remains in shadow, symbolizing the underworld. This extraordinary alignment, known as the Abu Simbel sun alignment, happens only twice each year, drawing crowds eager to witness a spectacle designed over 3,000 years ago.

Where is the Abu Simbel sun festival held

The festival takes place inside the Great Temple of Abu Simbel, located in Nubia near the shores of Lake Nasser, about 280 kilometers south of Aswan. The site lies close to Egypt’s border with Sudan and can be reached by air, road, or Nile cruise. The temple’s remote location adds to the sense of adventure, rewarding travelers with views of golden desert landscapes and the serene waters surrounding this UNESCO World Heritage treasure.
